What are eSIM packs?

An eSIM pack is a prepaid bundle of mobile data assigned to an eSIM profile for a specific place and time. Instead of a monthly contract, you buy exactly what a trip needs: a country pack for a single destination, a regional pack covering a group of countries, or a global pack. Each pack comes with a data allowance (say 1 GB, 5 GB, or unlimited) and a validity period (often 7, 15 or 30 days).

The pack lives on your eSIM, so once it is installed you simply turn on data and start using it. There is no SIM card, no store visit, and no roaming meter running in the background — the amount you paid is the amount you spend.

The three types of pack, and when to use each

Country packs are best when your whole trip is in one place; they usually offer the most data for the money. Regional packs — such as a GCC or Middle East pack — suit multi-country itineraries where a single-country plan would leave you stranded at the border. Global packs cover many countries at once and are handy for long, wide-ranging trips, though the per-gigabyte cost is typically higher.

Match the pack to your route first, then to your appetite for data. Choosing a regional pack for a one-country trip means overpaying; choosing a country pack for a multi-country trip means buying again mid-journey. rova offers country, GCC and regional packs so you can align the plan to the itinerary rather than the other way round.

How much data do you actually need?

A rough guide: light use — maps, messaging and email — runs about 500 MB to 1 GB per week. Moderate use with social media and some browsing lands around 1 GB to 3 GB per week. Heavy use with video calls, streaming and hotspotting can pass 5 GB per week. If you rely on hotel and café Wi-Fi for streaming, you can size down; if the eSIM is your only connection, size up.

Because eSIM packs are prepaid and top-uppable, there is no penalty for starting modest. With rova you can add more data to the same profile in seconds if you run low, so you are not forced to over-buy up front “just in case.”

Why packs beat roaming — and why a reusable profile matters

The core appeal of eSIM packs is price certainty. Pay-per-use roaming can reach around $2,000 per gigabyte on some carriers; an eSIM pack starting from $2 replaces that with a fixed, upfront cost. That predictability is a big reason travel eSIM revenues hit roughly US$1.8 billion in 2025, up 85% year-on-year according to Juniper Research, while GSMA Intelligence expects eSIM smartphone connections to reach around 4.9 billion by 2030.

The other thing to look for is whether the profile is reusable. Many travel eSIMs are effectively single-use — a fresh install and sign-up for every trip. rova instead uses one lifetime eSIM: you register once, then every future trip is just a new pack added to the same profile. Over a few trips, that convenience compounds.
